  4. Hoping to find more updates about Carmelite NGO's presence and/or activities surrounding the Copenhagen climate change conference. It's good to see information and links on our Carmelite NGO's website concerning the conference.
Climate change is such a controversial topic, even among Carmelites, so it's good to have some simple facts available, both pro and con. Please keep us informed!

  5. The UN Commission for Social Development has begun & runs from Feb.2-11. The theme of the conference is poverty eradication. The workshops & side events include: initiatives to reduce inequality; promoting social integration; human trafficking; and various strategies for achieving substantial social progress & development for the poorest billion in our world. Our Carmelite NGO, along with affiliated religious orders & Catholic communities, is actively participating in select strategies & interventions in this global action plan. We are endeavoring, please God, to bring the Carmelite dimension of prayer and compassion- especially for the poorest & most disadvantaged to this commitment. Please stay posted for updates. Peace, Jack Jameson

  7. The 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women began February 22 at the UN and runs through March 4, 2011. The priority theme of CSW 55 is “Access and Participation of Women and Girls in Education, Training, Science, and Technology…To Promote To Full Employment and Decent Work.”

CSW 55 also marks the start of a new UN entity called “UN Women.” The aim of this agency is to achieve gender equality through the empowerment of women worldwide. Ms. Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile and an M.D., has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to lead this entity. With the formation of UN Women, there now exists an intergovernmental body to set global standards for women’s rights and empowerment, to promote accountability of the United Nations’ system in this important job, and to monitor progress by member states.

While the high level policy makers are focusing their efforts on UN Women and the educational practices that will accelerate progress toward global equality between women and men, this is only the front page news. The real issues being attended to are those of human rights and responsibilities, human dignity, humanitarian action for the poorest and most vulnerable, and the necessity of decent work and sustainable economic development. Both in the General Assembly as well as behind the scenes, NGOs and representatives of civil society are passionately concentrating on matters of health and safety and the well being of all: women and men, children and the family – from the community level to entire populations. Mostly, it will be in the program of side events – parallel meetings and activities organized outside the formal UN exchanges – that NGOs will share knowledge and practical experiences with one another – experts in their fields - and with representatives of governments and UN Agencies.

Please stay posted for a follow-up report and commentary to this important Commission.

  8. Our hope and prayer while attending the 55th Session of the Commission of the Status of Women has been that all those gathered at the UN – governments, civil society, women’s organizations, all the young people and the entire UN system – will advance gender equality and women’s rights worldwide. That’s a tall order but an essential one – and a no-brainer. Gender equality is a basic human right first and foremost, and has huge socio-economic ramifications. Empowering women fuels thriving economies, supercharging productivity and growth – especially within the most impoverished sectors of the world. Hillary Clinton, in her address to Amnesty International, observed that when “women flourish, families flourish; communities flourish and nations flourish.” And according to Michelle Bachelet – Executive Director of UN Women – “Women’s strength, women’s industry and women’s wisdom are humankind’s greatest untapped resources.”

The creation of UN Women and the highly visible presence this entity has had during the entire CSW 55 looks to be a shining light on the path to gender equality. Although the UN has played a significant role in promoting the empowerment of women during the past decades, many of the previous goals, targets and commitments – including financial commitments – remain unfulfilled. By reforming the UN gender equality agencies and building upon them by the creation of UN Women, the entire architecture of women’s rights and “fundamental human rights in the dignity and worth of all human persons” (Preamble to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) has been advanced to the highest priority and decision-making levels.

Finally, it is our further hope and prayer that the United Nations and UN Women, in particular, give strong voice to civil society. NGOs can provide the grass roots leadership and support needed to facilitate policies and programs that genuinely affect the daily lives of women and their communities. NGOs and civil society are the key components in setting the priorities and ultimately ensuring that the United Nations and UN Women realize and harness their potential as “powerful vehicles for advancing women’s rights on the ground” (Gear Campaign website).

Greetings to the students of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona and the students of Loyola University in New Orleans. “May the Word of Christ ever fill your hearts – share with one another the wisdom you receive.” (Antiphon Prayer)
